![]() ![]() Dundalli had been kept in chains and in solitary for the seven months of his confinement in Brisbane Gaol.Īs Dundalli mounted the scaffold he called out to a large number of Aboriginal people, who were gathered in the brushes that lined the Wickham Terrace hill, overlooking the scene, to avenge his death. For over 10 years starting from 1843, Dundalli led a strong resistance against the European settlers in the Brisbane region.Ī large crowd of people both Aboriginals and European settlers attended the execution. In his early 20s, he was chosen as a 'Turrwan' (Yuggara word for great man/leader) to conduct restorative justice for the shooting & poisoning of Aboriginal people by settlers in colonial Brisbane.ĭundalli was renowned for his size and strength. It was the last official public execution in QLD.ĭundalli was born c1820 in the Blackall Ranges north of the Glasshouse Mountains.
